2013 WHSC Scholarship

2013 WHSC Post-Secondary Scholarship Initiative:

Call for Entries

The Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) is now accepting entries for the 13th annual WHSC Post-Secondary Scholarship Initiative.

Applicants are asked to write an essay or design a poster explaining how they would raise the profile of workplace health and safety among young and new workers in their community.

All workers have the right to be protected on the job. And the legal duty to ensure this occurs rests ultimately with the employer. When employers don’t comply, the health and well-being of workers is placed in harm’s way. No more so than those new to a workplace or a job.

Research published in 2006 by Ontario’s Institute for Work and Health (IWH) highlights the fact new workers are four to six times more likely to be injured during the first month on the job, than workers with more than one year experience. More recent research from the IWH confirms this finding and shows that higher risk of work-related injury for new workers has persisted over the past ten years.

The IWH’s research suggested age had little if anything to do with this excess risk. They and others have cited lack of job and workplace experience, lack of training as well as exposure to hazardous working conditions as reasons new workers are more likely to be injured early on in their job tenure.

The WHSC Student Scholarship Initiative intends to shed light on the excess risk high school students and others will face when they first enter the workforce. Equally important, the initiative hopes to raise awareness about the important workplace actions needed to make work safer and healthier, including legally mandated health and safety training for new and all workers.

The WHSC Student Scholarship Initiative is open to any student residing in Ontario and beginning their first year of full or part-time studies leading to a degree, diploma or certificate from a publicly-funded Ontario College or University. Successful candidates will be eligible for one of eight $1,000 scholarships.

The submission deadline for the 2013 WHSC Post-Secondary Student Scholarship initiative is Friday June 7, 2013. Winners will be announced in fall 2013.
